Procrastination: Putting off doing things you should be doing at the moment to do something else.

You can mitigate the root causes of procrastination by:

  • Facing an unpleasant task—evokes your favorite memories memorabilia as a basis for writing your manuscript

  • Being disorganized—uses a workbook program and daily exercises to progressively create your manuscript.

  • Feeling overwhelmed—provides a calendar and small, manageable steps to break down the task into bite-sized pieces.

  • Thinking as a perfectionist—offers everything you need to erase doubt and create your perfect manuscript.

  • Freezing upon making decisions—prompts you to make the specific decisions needed to write your manuscript.

1. Reinforce positive values. Writing your manuscript has enormous value, in general and to you specifically. Focus on WHY you’re embarking on the journey and create a list of your reasons.

2. Create observable benefits. Doubts and negative self-talk can lead to fear of failure. Mitigate negativity and doubt by dealing with them directly. List your doubts and write an affirmation for each.

3. Pat yourself on the back and give yourself a reward. Realize how hard it was to start this endeavor…but you did it! And you’re on your way to creating a treasured legacy for your family and friends. Yahoo! Take the time to pat yourself on the back and give yourself a reward.

4. Create a buddy system. Creates a community of support via individual coaching or group conference calls.

Procrastination Due to Writer’ Block. If the cause of your procrastination is writer’s block, there are numerous steps to can take to unblock.

What’s Your Procrastination MO?

  • Going to the fridge for snacks or drinks

  • Reading/writing e-mail or texts

  • Talking on the phone

  • Chatting on social networks

  • Playing games

  • Surfing the web

  • Watching TV

  • Playing with your pet

  • Taking a nap

  • Reading a book,

  • Listening to music

  • Working on a hobby

  • Doing house/yard work

  • Saying “yes” to low priority items

  • Waiting for the mood to strike you

Be mindful of your procrastination habits, so you can stop them if you lose focus while writing your manuscript.

If you begin to procrastinate:

  1. STOP your activity, close your eyes and focus on the title of your manuscript and your cover photo.
  2. Visualize your finished manuscript and your family and friends reading it, their talking about it, their connecting with you about it; their deciding to do research about a topic; their deciding to write their own manuscripts or journals.
  3. Stand in front of the mirror, look yourself in the eyes, and recommit to writing your manuscript.
  4. Read the suggestions for avoiding writer’s block.
